Buddha taught that life is change.  Though the flowing waters of a river appear to be always the same, they are in fact constantly changing.  And so is life- a never ending, always renewing stream of all the elements of exsitence that death cannot change or interrupt life.  The goal is to leave this cycle and achieve NIRVANA. The design is first drawn on the fabric.  Then the artist paints over the entire design with hot wax.  When the hotwax cools, the wonderful colors are added.  The wax allows the paint to spread in a section and acts as a border so that other colors can be added.  Once all the painting is done the whole piece is sealed in wax and scrunched up in a little ball, then dipped in another paint, which creates the crackle design.  The wax is then ironed out making the piece soft again.Batik art pieces, like this one, have adorned palace walls for thousands of years.  Measures: 58 inches in Width X 86 inches in Length.
