Description
Wolfgang Peretti Poggi, an Italian artist of Bologna, has taken scenes from the works of the Italian medieval poet Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), mainly The Divine Comedy, and matched them with the 78-cards of the tarot. The images, originally painted in acrylic on wood panels, are similar in style to the paintings of Giotto who lived from around 1266 to 1377. This beautiful deck uses gold inks and is absolutely stunning, was published in 1983 by Produzioni Editoriali d’Ami of Milan. The back design shows an 8-pointed star framed by a geometric pattern. Each card is heavy with symbolism. For example, The Fool shows the poet carrying a pack and two scrolls up the steps of a house. Behind him are a leopard, a lion and a wolf, three beasts that obstruct Dante as he tries to leave the Wood of Error. The animals symbolize malice and fraud, violence and ambition and lust respectively. Dante is saved by the appearance of Human Reason, personified by Virgil. The greyhound in the lower right corner will hunt down the beasts. For further explanation see The Encyclopedia of Tarot, Volume III by Stuart R. Kaplan. Oversized cards measure apx. 6" x 3-1/2". Originally the collating of this deck by the printer was problematic and many decks were missing the Page of Cups. This is such a deck so we have inserted a duplicate 3 of Cups to use as the Page for readings. We have included a xeroxed Page of Cups for reference. Otherwise, cards in mint condition with box and booklet in Italian.
