Voodoo Estate! This type of call usually gets us excited as they are a treasure trove. Located here in Florida, there was no electricity or running water so we rigged our own lighting & in we went. If you have ever seen the Adams Family you will have some idea as to what we were greeted with! Then the attorney handling the liquidation gave us some background. The home had belonged to an alleged powerful Voodoo Priestess/JooJoo Exorcist, grand daughter of a Marie Laveau, & favored daughter of a Marie Glapion. This did not have much impact on us other than to cause an uneasy feeling when in the house & we declined to spend the night while inventorying, deciding to stay in a hotel to return during daylight. Our research has shown that this woman was what she claimed & was indeed descended from a long line of well known Vodoun family originating in New Orleans in the early 1800's. We were pretty unnerved by this until we discovered they were also devout Catholics! Although I have to admit this was unlike any Catholic home I have ever been in & some of the items found inside were a little more than unnerving. There was no feeling of dread or unwelcome in the home, however there was quite a bit of contraband & other items we can not sell here on ebay. This is one of a few pieces from this estate we will be listing this week, so check our other items! We will, upon the winning bidder's request, issue a named Letter of Authenticity with each piece from this estate, complying with the terms set forth to us by the estate's attorney. Back To The Auction   Found in her private altar room which contained her six  personal curse candle altars. These were large, split bamboo buckets that contained, three to five foot multiple candle altars for her personal use.  Her notes indicate she would obtain an object belonging to the one to be cursed, either by gift or theft & place it onto or into the altar whereupon she would light the appropriate candles, incense & cigars, consume intoxicants & weave her curse enchantments upon those unlucky enough to have fallen in her disfavor. The candle altars have all been sold & those that own them have reported a number of odd items such as jewelry, gemstones, watches, live ammunition with names on it, locks of hair, finger & toenail cuttings, casket hardware, a glass eye, photographs &  & other "odd" objects found imbedded in them.   These objects would be imbedded in the candle wax which would be allowed to drip down & eventually cover them. Three of these altars have been used to date that we know of with at least two of these instances documented as being successful & in our opinion, newsworthy. ~!~ "The Print" The acquisition of this family heirloom is attributed to; "the young LiDiex, taken from the Old Brewery wake room in 1852" in her journaled inventory. It is also one of the few pieces left that had been in the possession of her Mother & Grandmother before her, Marie Laveau & Marie Glapion & allegedly used to do ill will by them. LiDiex The research involved in this estate provides continuous fascination. These men, known only as LiDiex were the descendent's of the original Man Known Only As LiDiex, the survivor & saboteur of the slave Ship Henrietta Marie in 1701, who found his way to New Orleans to meet with the young Grandmother of our priestess, Marie Laveau.   The original LiDiex was a wood carver as were most of his descendants.   This is another case of the multi-generational relationships we have encountered with this family as the Lidiex all had a strong association with these women.  But more of that in "The Upcoming Book."    It should also be noted that they were close, trusted, practitioners & followers of their mistresses, deeply involved in their works & activities.   Of the 1701 LiDiex, their are numerous journal entries referring for his ability to shape shift in the form of a serpent, a claimed inherited ability dating back in their bloodline 3000 years before Christ.   She also writes, "he was known as a high sorcerer with many demons bound to his will, claiming ancient blood servitude to Grandmother (Marie Laveau) and our bloodline." & "He has the living memory of the ancients."   Real or imagined, we do understand why she & her associates were as feared & respected as they were   ~!~   But Back to the Print   It is alleged that the youngest son of the 1701 LiDiex safeguarded runaway slaves along the underground railroad prior to & during the Civil War.  With their many supporters in New York he was a frequent visitor to some of the more upscale households of the time.  He also frequented the ghettos & was known to a number of gang leaders in the infamous Five Points of Lower Manhattan.   This framed print is one of the cart load of items he is said to have salvaged from a tenement named The Old Brewery.  According to their journals most of these acquisitions came from the same room, said to be a common room used for wake viewing among the tenants & patrons.     This building, converted into an apartment house with stall like partitions converted it into small flats that were rented to the poor.  These rooms housed whole families who did their cooking, eating & sleeping in that one room.   These were squalid living conditions where the street level & basement floors served as places of drink, narcotics, dancing, gambling & crime, including murder.  Many found themselves, beaten & robbed or worse.   This "Viewing Room" was apparently kept busy with it's 1,000 tenants living in a building that is said to have averaged a murder a night for fifteen years.   It is precisely these violent, unexpected deaths that caused this LiDiex to seek the meager furnishings of this room for "their demonic signatures" according to one of his journal entries.   Her use of these items in this altar room was as a conduit so to speak, a medium through which they could materialize to partake of her curse ceremonies right along with her.   Ya think?   Framed in it's original frame & glass, the backing was mounted onto the print in 1929 along with forty five $100 bills which we found when dismounting the print for examination.  This was a common occurrence with framed pieces from this estate.   It is an unsigned woodblock print that has been associated with paranormal activity while in our possession, such as the death mask in the picture opening it's eyes & materialization of demonic deities "seeking some action", which some say is caught in the photos below.   It measures approximately 22 1/4' x 10 1/4" x 1/2".   The pictures tell the tale as far as further description & condition.   At this point we must caution you if you are thinking of adding this to your collection.  It is not for everyone & a number of practitioner's have been in contact with it with negative results.  It was never an item of good will & happiness & what is attached to it has been with it for over 150 years & is assuredly much older. It is certainly a rare antique print with an extraordinary provenance that is much uglier than the pictures are able to depict. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have been contacted & visited by a number of people who were interested in the items from this estate since our first batch was listed. Among the buyers have been known psychics & practitioners. More than one, after adorning themselves or handling their purchase, stated "this is a woman of power!" Many of our customers, after receiving items from this estate have reported dream contacts & other unexplained phenomenon. Unusual, authentic Voodoo Priestess Estate piece & at a bargain price! The majority of this estate is now gone. 90% of what we had left, & it was considerable, has been split up & sold to a couple of private, foreign collector practitioners & will never be available to the public again. We made the decision to do this as we have had some pretty strange visits from even stranger individuals & there have been enough unexplained phenomenon going on in the warehouse where her things were kept that many of our employees refused to go in there.
