I have been wanting to keep the FINEST VARISCITE ON EARTH ALL TO MYSELF, because once this FINE COLLECTION is GONE, it's GONE!!! This spectacularly rare Variscite collection came to me by way of my Grandfather, Leeland Bigelow, an underground miner of Jerome and Chloride fame. Most of the gem quality Variscite that came from this locale was mined by Arthur Montgomery and Edwin Over in the summer of 1937. Since they were fresh from an epidot mining expedition on Green Monster Mountain on Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, they naturally named the Variscite mine the "Little Green Monster." The Little Green Monster Variscite Mine was located in the Clay Canyon Phosphate deposit deep in the heart of the wild and remote, rough and rugged Qquirrh Mountains in legendary far western Utah County in the State of Utah in the mineral rich Western United States. The matrix of this rare variety of Variscite is composed of variations of crandallite, goyazite, wardite, and millisite. The spectacularly intense emerald color of this Variscite has been credited to the presence of Vanadium (0.53%) and Chromium (0.069%) substituting for phosphorus in portions of the gemstone (Foster and Schaller, 1966). Scandium (0.001 - 0.1%) have also been noted in this unusual occurrence (Frondel, Ito and Montgomery, 1968). Strontium (>1.0%) has also been noted in the matrix portion of the gemstone (Foster and Schaller, 1966)(Blount 1974). I believe this material to have been obtained during a late Depression Era trip by my Grandfather to Salt Lake City to check on the welfare of relative Susan Young, daughter of Lucy (Bigelow) Young and Brigham Young in the early fall of 1937, one of only two years the Little Green Monster Mine was in production, 1937 and 1939. *********METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF VARISCITE********** Variscite is said to be a soothing stone.
