Description
New Page 1 THE MEANING of WITCHCRAFT by Gerald B. Gardner (founder of the Gardnerian Tradition of Witchcraft) First published 1959 This Impression June 1971 by Samuel Weiser Inc. NYC HARD COVER / DUST JACKET Near Mint Condition! The origins of Witchcraft are shrouded in obscurity, but this penetrating survey of the "Old Religion" in ancient, medieval and modern history, establishes the face that witches have always been more sinned against than sinning. Indeed, the author contends that practices attributed to witches through the centuries - such as the Black Mass, and the killing of animals or babies as blood sacrifices - were the subject matter of dubious confessions obtained from women who haad been subject to excruciating torture. Real witches do not believe in the devil, let alone invoke him. The Old Horned God of the witches happens to be the phallic god of fertility. There are few genuine witches in contemporary society, and they keep themselves very much to themselves. G. B. Gardner was himself an initiated witch, and thus his revelations concerning ancient and modern witchcraft posess a unique authority. In addition, Gardner was the director on the Committee of the Folklore Society, and was a Member of the Society for Psychical Research. Under the pen-name of "Scire" he wrote an historical novel, High Magic's Aid, which was published in 1949. Witchcraft Today, written under his own name, was published in 1954. It was the first book ever written describing what witches are and what they do, by someone who had actually taken part in their ceremonies. 283 pages. I believe this to be the FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. No rips, tears, underlining, dog eared pages. Pages are crispy and white! Binding is super tight. This book appears to have been NEVER READ!
